Vegan Cold Remedy

February 20, 2018

Recipe adopted from thepositivemom.com[Recipe makes (1) serving].

This may seem like an odd recipe to post this week, but with peak flu season currently among us, we thought it was appropriate to share one of our go-to cold remedies.  Since we stumbled across this recipe last year, it's been one that we go to at the first signs of feeling sick due to (1) the use of natural ingredients over medications and (2) due to its effectiveness.  Each ingredient has a unique role in the cold-fighting process.

  • Garlic is an antibiotic and boosts the immune system.
  • Onion provides anti-inflammatory benefits, boosts the immune system, and has antioxidants.
  • Rosemary boosts the immune system, alleviates muscle pain, and has antioxidants.
  • Cinnamon helps with sore throats and coughing.
  • Molasses is high in minerals (largely iron) and vitamins, and helps deter headaches, stress, and fatigue.

The next time have the smallest inkling that your body is fighting something, reach for a cup of this natural concoction.  Sure, it's not the tastiest list of ingredients to drink, but once you experience its healing powers, you won't think twice.

INGREDIENTS:

2 1/2 cups water
6 garlic cloves, minced
1/4 red onion, sliced
1 sprig of fresh rosemary

1 tablespoon cinnamon
2 tablespoons molasses

DIRECTIONS:

Add the water, garlic, onion, and rosemary to a saucepan.  Bring to a boil, and maintain a gentle boil for 10 minutes.  Remove from heat and whisk in the cinnamon and molasses.  Pour into a mug, using a fine-mesh strainer to remove any solids.  [Side note:  We like to constantly stir the drink with each sip, to prevent the cinnamon from settling to the bottom].

  1. Oh cool, wish I'd had this after my 2-day Greyhound trip at the start of the month. I will bookmark it and give it a try for the next cold...which hopefully isn't anytime soon! :)

    1. Fingers crossed :) Yeah, this drink has helped us out quite a bit; the key though is to drink it at the first sign of a cold.
